John Baker

2nd Premier of South Australia

John Baker was born in England in 1813 and settled in South Australia in 1839. He became a pastoralist with extensive land holdings. In 1851 he was appointed to the Legislative Council; in the constitutional debates of the 1850s Baker fought for a limited franchise in the upper house to preserve the rights of property owners in the colony, like himself. He later became South Australia’s second premier.
