Barbara Baird

Lesbian activist

Barbara Baird is best known for her academic work in gender studies and activism within lesbian and gay coalitions in Adelaide. In 1993, Baird was the co-recipient of the Equal Opportunity Achievement Award for her work with the Lesbian and Gay Community Action group. LGCA were instrumental in setting up relationships between South Australian police and the gay and lesbian community, cultural events like Stonewall Week. Baird writes on the overlap of race, sexuality and reproductive rights, as well as the experiences of lesbian women in cultural politics and their political organisation.
