Mary Lee

Social Reformer

Mary Lee fought for legal changes to women’s status as secretary of the Purity Society, including raising the age of consent to sixteen. Along with other members of the Purity Society, in 1888 she established the South Australian Women’s Suffrage League which advocated for the vote as essential to women’s participation as citizens.

‘…“Women's enfranchisement” shall be found engraved upon my heart.'
